Clinitouch supports underserved communities in South Africa under new initiative

We are thrilled to announce Clinitouch as the technology provider for a new partnership between Spirit Health Foundation and Unjani Clinics. This initiative will use our remote patient monitoring technology to provide accessible healthcare to patients in underserved communities across South Africa.

Who are Spirit Health Foundation & Unjani Clinics?

Launched towards the end of 2023, Spirit Health Foundation is an independent, non-profit organisation with the mission of bringing accessible healthcare to all, focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa. The Foundation will utilise the health tech platforms and services of Spirit Health – including our remote monitoring technology, Clinitouch.

Based in South Africa, Unjani Clinics provide funding and support to professional nurses to set up, own and sustainably run clinics in low-income communities. With over 178 Unjani Clinics, they provide over 90,000 consultations per month across conditions such as infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases and maternal health.

Together, they will use our tried and tested technology in an effort to build smarter health systems to improve people’s lives, even in the hardest to reach communities.

What does this partnership mean?

With Spirit Health Foundation’s support, Unjani Clinic Health Promotion Officers will use Clinitouch on their mobile phones to provide education, screening and monitoring for a variety of health conditions within the South African community. This data will then be sent to nurses at the Unjani Clinics, who will receive, review and treat accordingly.

Spirit Health Foundation will work alongside Unjani to install Clinitouch, build health worker capacity, develop clinical pathways, provide monitoring and evaluation, and deploy the service across the Unjani Clinic Network in South Africa.

By bringing digital health solutions to the forefront, this will enable Unjani Clinics' expanding network of over 190 care settings to reach more underserved communities with the essential healthcare they need more effectively and efficiently. All with the aim of protecting and improving the health of people most in need.

Seeing the project on the ground

Our Medical Director and Co-Founder, Dr Noel O'Kelly recently visited South Africa alongside Spirit Health Foundation CEO, Rich Bryson, to meet the teams on the ground. Noel commented:

“I had the pleasure of seeing the innovative work done by Unjani and their nurses in-person on a recent trip to South Africa.

"What they are doing is fantastic - bringing affordable high-quality care to their patients in challenging environments. I am so pleased that we can provide this technology and our team’s expertise to support the initiative between Spirit Foundation and Unjani.

“It was a humbling experience to see this great work done by such motivated caring professionals. Thank you for all for your hospitality and facilitation in making this visit so successful. I’m looking forward to seeing how these new digital health services help to improve healthcare access in underserved communities.”

Spirit Health Foundation and Unjani Clinics will be implementing the first phase of the initiative through clinics on-the-ground in the first half of 2024 – keep up to date on Linkedin.
