Alastair’s story: sent home on a pneumonia virtual ward

After being diagnosed with pneumonia, Alastair (age 53) was discharged onto a pneumonia virtual ward. He was remotely monitored by the healthcare team in Leicester using Clinitouch, a remote patient monitoring platform. Read about his experience below.

“The care on the virtual ward was brilliant, it kept me out of hospital. It was like having private healthcare.”

Alastair’s story

"After feeling unwell and unable to move, I called for help. The paramedics took me to Glenfield hospital where I was diagnosed with pneumonia. After being in the hospital all day, I was happy when I was able to go home. I was safely discharged on to a pneumonia virtual ward for a week and a half. The care on the virtual ward was brilliant, it kept me out of hospital. It was like having private healthcare.

"I felt 100% connected to the healthcare team and really happy with the service.”

Each day I answered the questions and provided observations, like my oxygen levels, on the Clinitouch app. It was reassuring that a nurse would then review them. I felt 100% connected to the healthcare team and really happy with the service. During my time on the virtual ward I had around 3-4 calls from the team. They would contact me quickly if something didn't look right and I dealt with the same nurse which made it even easier.

I felt I was able to see how I was recovering in real time. You can visibly see the improvements when entering observations and answering questions. E.g. if my observations for oxygen were low, the nurse would call me and tell me what it should be. Then when I started seeing oxygen readings for what they should be, I knew I was improving. This gave me so much confidence.

“Using Clinitouch gave me security - I felt like somebody was looking out for me."

Once I started to feel better, I was able to take the remote monitoring equipment to work and do the afternoon questions and observations there. Everything was very straightforward. The impact this virtual ward has had on my life is massive. Using Clinitouch gave me security - I felt like somebody was looking out for me.”

This pneumonia virtual ward is currently up and running in the NHS and making a difference to patients' lives. You can read more about it here.
