Ann’s story: discharged on a pneumonia virtual ward

After being in hospital for a few days with pneumonia, Ann (age 67) was placed onto a pneumonia virtual ward. She was remotely monitored by the healthcare team in Leicester using Clinitouch, a remote patient monitoring platform. Read about her experience below.

“Being remote monitored meant I could go home earlier and get back to normality and also be around my family. I also believe that being at home helped my recovery and made it quicker.”

Ann's story

"After being admitted to hospital with pneumonia for few days, I was discharged onto the pneumonia virtual ward. The healthcare team wanted to monitor me, especially as my blood pressure readings were low at times. I was pleased to be given the choice to be remote monitored at home and happy to give it a go. If I hadn’t, I would have to go the hospital several times to get checked. I don't drive so would have needed to plan for travel every time, so it was much more convenient that I could recover at home.

“I found Clinitouch easy to use, it was just like using apps on my iPad.”

Being remote monitored meant I could go home earlier and get back to normality and also be around my family. I also believe that being at home helped my recovery and made it quicker - the hospital was noisy and affected my sleep.

I found Clinitouch easy to use, it was just like using apps on my iPad. Once I did it the first time, it was all fine from there. Each day I would enter my information into Clinitouch and within 5-10 minutes I would get a call from the nurses to check on me with any advice they had for me.

“The specialist pneumonia nurses were brilliant and called me quickly with what I needed to do.”

On a few occasions I had low readings for my blood pressure and oxygen which meant I needed attention. The specialist pneumonia nurses were brilliant and called me quickly with exactly what I needed to do. This was so reassuring and helped in my recovery. I liked how being remote monitored on Clinitouch made my life much easier and connected to a nurse on the other end."

This pneumonia virtual ward is currently up and running in the NHS and making a difference to patients' lives. You can read more about it here.
