We're proud to announce the launch of our first project in Nigeria, helping to transform maternal health services in Cross River State.
Our in-country partner, Utopian Health Services Limited, joined the global Clinitouch Partner Program in 2023. Now, they’re working alongside the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (CRSPHCDA), and with funding from Stanbic IBTC Bank, to deliver consistent, accessible healthcare to pregnant women and new mothers in Calabar.
The aim? To show how remote patient monitoring can, in the words of Dr John Adesioye, “offer a lifeline for expectant and new mothers.”
In Nigeria, maternal deaths account for 32% of all fatalities among women aged 15 to 49
Using Clinitouch, women from both rural and urban communities will be remotely supported throughout pregnancy and into early motherhood. Over the course of 12 months, trained caseworkers will visit each participant monthly to collect vital signs — including blood pressure and pulse — along with responses to localised health questionnaires. All of this data is uploaded straight into the Clinitouch platform, which automatically analyses the information, assigns a risk score, and flags any early signs of complications to a designated gynaecologist for review.
Nigeria faces some of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world. Maternal deaths account for 32% of all fatalities among women aged 15 to 49. This pilot is designed to drive better outcomes through earlier clinical intervention, stronger relationships between women and their healthcare providers, and a shift away from traditional birth attendants when higher-risk care is needed.
The project also aims to boost health literacy, helping women feel more informed, confident and in control of their own health throughout pregnancy and beyond.
At the end of the pilot, a full impact report will be published to evaluate results and explore options for scaling the programme to other parts of Nigeria.
"It’s exactly the kind of bold, purpose-driven idea our Partner Program was created for."
Dr John Adesioye, CEO of Utopian Health Services Limited, said: “The goal is to reduce the effects of barriers in seeking care for pregnant women. This improves their well-being and their outcomes, thereby reducing mortality and morbidity. Clinitouch has helped design this pilot programme that will highlight how RPM can offer a lifeline for expectant and new mothers, improve compliance with treatment, and enable early intervention from healthcare providers.”
Bruce Adams, Managing Director at Clinitouch, added: "We’ve been excited about this project ever since Utopian shared their ambition to use Clinitouch in maternal health. It’s exactly the kind of bold, purpose-driven idea our Partner Program was created for — combining deep local expertise with smart technology to unlock better access to care. We’ve always believed remote monitoring can reach far beyond traditional settings, and this is a powerful step towards making that vision a reality."
Mr Kunle Adedeji, Acting Chief Executive, Stanbic IBTC Holdings, said: “At Stanbic IBTC, we are committed to driving impactful partnerships that improve lives and support national development goals. Through this innovative collaboration, we are leveraging technology to help tackle maternal health challenges in Nigeria. We believe every woman deserves access to quality care during pregnancy and beyond, and we are proud to be part of a solution that brings us closer to that reality.”
