Jill’s story: 10 days on a pneumonia virtual ward

After experiencing chest pain and difficulty breathing, Jill (age 72) was placed onto a pneumonia virtual ward. She was remotely monitored by the healthcare team in Leicester using Clinitouch, a remote patient monitoring platform. Read about her experience below.

“When the team first spoke to me about using Clinitouch, I had a look and thought to myself ‘I can do this’. The team at the hospital explained it very clearly to me and went through exactly what I had to do.”

Jill's story

"I decided to ring an ambulance after having chest pain and difficulty breathing - I thought I was having a heart attack! The ambulance arrived and took me to a treatment centre for same day emergency care, where I was told I had pneumonia. I was given antibiotics and remote monitoring equipment, including a tablet, blood pressure monitor, thermometer and pulse oximeter.

“Having the option to use Clinitouch and be remote monitored meant I could go home the same day.”

Having the option to use Clinitouch and be remote monitored meant I could go home the same day. Plus, I wasn’t admitted to hospital, which was good. When the team first spoke to me about using Clinitouch, I had a look and thought to myself ‘I can do this’. The team at the hospital explained it very clearly to me and went through exactly what I had to do. It also came with a helpful patient booklet.

I was very grateful to have the opportunity to be cared for in this way as it meant I didn’t have to stay in hospital. Having pneumonia was frightening and by being remotely monitored, I knew if there was anything worrying, it would get picked up quickly by the healthcare team and they would ring or message me. It helped that using the equipment and answering questions on Clinitouch was straightforward.

“I really appreciate having Clinitouch and it helped me with my recovery from pneumonia.”

I would definitely recommend Clinitouch as it was easy to use and it keeps you connected to healthcare professionals. I imagine it can be daunting for some, but it’s easy once it’s been explained to you and you’ve had a go at putting in your answers. I really appreciate having Clinitouch and it helped me with my recovery from pneumonia."

This pneumonia virtual ward is currently up and running in the NHS and making a difference to patients' lives. You can read more about it here.
